Jasper did it again, he conquered The Great Southern Brevet. For us yankees The Great Southern Brevet is a 683.5 mile (1100 km) race that tours the southern part of the New Zealand’s South Island.
Jasper at the finish.
I think.
Who the hell would know? The dude sure knows how to bundle up!
Jasper’s summary of his last day out on the trail:
“It started off great – 5.30am start in ranfurly, a great early morning through Naseby, tail wind up Danseys. Then It turned into a strong head wind As I turned at Duntroon. It got stronger and stronger and stronger. At the top of Hakataramea pass I could barely stand let alone ride with me being sand blasted from the sand, dust and gravel blowing into me. After the top of the pass I had to pedal hard DOWNHILL to keep any sort of slow progress forward frequently being blown of into the ditch on the side of the road. Then it got worse. Hail, sleet and snow started straight into my face. It started to get very cold and dark. A bit further on both my front lights gave up in the atrocious conditions. I was riding trying to use my tiny red rear light to see into the blackness. I eventually made it to Tekapo at 11.30pm where the photo was taken.“

AWESOME pics of the SUMMER SNOW in New Zealand. Yes, dudes and dudettes, January = Summer in New Zealand. AND there is a boatload of snow on the course. Definitely reminds me of the Colorado Trail conditions in July.
A History Lesson:
Jasper, with excellent pacing from The Judd, completed the Le Petite Brevet in November 2011. AND the Super Freak also conquered the Kiwi Brevet a few years ago. So Jasper is a big bad Brevet fanatic and is probably looking for equally challenging 1100+ km rides in other outrageous locations. It will be interesting to see what Ludacris adventure he’ll undertake next. Maybe Jasper would enjoy 500 miles of the Colorado Trail with The Brothers Rohwer. Maybe.
Jasper’s best quote:
“These Brevets are all utter madness but thats the way I like it!”
Now that is why Jasper is a Super Freak with Full Membership with Back of the Pack Racing.
One Question:
9 photos after an 1100km race? That’s a concern. I had ~ 250 photos after 500 miles on the Colorado Trail. Maybe that’s why I averaged 45 miles a day and Jasper averaged 125 miles (200km) a day. Something to think about. (Just joking, Jasper probably picked the best of the best – this day and age we all must go GREEN and not waste all the 1s and 0s associated with multi-national emails.)
The Brevets:
These monster Brevet’s (1100km) on the South Island are scheduled every 2 years. I’m pretty sure we (The Morale Chairman & The Judd) will make the next one in 2014. And of course, that means Dan, The Ultimate Crew Chief, and Henry (?) will be forced into the adventure via EXTREME peer pressure. 2014 will be here before we know it – unless the Alien Invasion actually happens on Dec 21st.
